There are some events in every person’s life that distinctly shape who he or she is to become. For Betsy Wells, it was the late fall of 1946. She and her parents had moved into an old farmhouse in Northern Virginia with only fireplaces to heat the entire two stories. Chills still run through her body when she recalls her father scraping the frost off the inside of the windows one morning. She also remembers going into town to take a bath because the tub was so filthy. “The house was known as the dirtiest house in Fairfax County,” Betsy says with a laugh. “But my parents had vision and they were able to turn it into a beautiful home.”
Patience is a Virtue
That lesson Betsy learned early in her formative years has remained with her throughout life. She understands that envisioning the possibilities is just as important as following through to see the end results. That’s why she readily accepted the challenge of renovating the home where she currently lives. It’s the house her parents bought when they decided to retire in Charles Town, where Betsy’s mother was born and raised. She inherited the home in a rundown condition, but saw its potential and didn’t hesitate to begin the tedious work.
Since moving to Charles Town in 1996, Betsy has expanded the kitchen and family room, converted the sleeping porch to an office and a bedroom, and created a master bathroom where there was once a bedroom. But she says there is still more work to be done because there’s always room for improvement.
Keeper of Dreams
Betsy is in no hurry to complete her renovations as she plans to stay in this town of which she has grown so fond. During the years she has lived there, she has been active in community affairs. As a descendent of President George Washington, whose youngest brother Charles founded this unique town, Betsy appreciates the historical heritage of the area which she has worked to promote through her involvement with the Jefferson County Historical Society, the Landmarks Commission and The Washington Heritage Trail. She has come to realize that it took great vision for Charles Washington to build a town in undeveloped territory in 1786.
